Addressing Bullying at the Highest Levels: A Call for Change

Updated: Mar 24, 2024

Gaffe caught by hot mic during SWISD board meeting prompts complaint, apology…

Bullying has long been a pervasive issue in schools, affecting students of all ages and backgrounds. However, when instances of bullying occur at the highest levels of school administration, it raises serious concerns about the culture and environment within the educational institution. The recent incident involving Pete Bernal, a former trustee of the Southwest Independent School District, sheds light on the prevalence of bullying among adults in positions of power.

In a shocking turn of events, Bernal was subjected to derogatory remarks by Ida Sudolcan, the vice president of the school board, during a board training session. Sudolcan's comments, caught on a hot microphone, labeled Bernal as a "dope," demonstrating a blatant lack of respect and professionalism. While Sudolcan later issued an apology, the damage had already been done, highlighting a disturbing trend of severe and pervasive harassment on a continuous basis during his tenure at the hands of those entrusted with the welfare of students and staff.

What makes this incident particularly troubling is its occurrence at the highest echelons of school leadership. School boards and administrative bodies are meant to set an example for students and staff, promoting a culture of respect, inclusivity, and professionalism. When individuals in these positions engage in bullying behavior, it sends a dangerous message that such conduct is acceptable, undermining efforts to create safe and supportive learning environments.

Moreover, the impact of bullying at the highest levels reverberates throughout the entire school district. Students and staff look to their leaders for guidance and support, and when those leaders fail to uphold basic standards of decency, it can erode trust and confidence in the institution as a whole. Furthermore, incidents of bullying among adults can serve as a model for students, perpetuating a cycle of harmful behavior that has far-reaching consequences.

It is imperative that incidents of bullying at all levels of school administration are addressed swiftly and decisively. Sensitivity training and policy reviews, as proposed by the Southwest Independent School District board in response to the incident involving Bernal, are important steps towards fostering a more respectful and inclusive environment. However, true change requires a collective commitment to challenging and dismantling the attitudes and behaviors that contribute to bullying.

As members of the school community, we must hold our leaders accountable for their actions and advocate for a culture of mutual respect and dignity. By standing up against bullying in all its forms, we can create schools where every student and staff member feels valued, supported, and safe. It is only through collective effort and unwavering determination that we can ensure a brighter and more inclusive future for our schools and communities
